Different pharmaceutical products call for different storage ranges. Here are the temperature bands most cold chain shipments are built around, and why matching them matters.

Why ranges are defined so precisely
Maintaining the correct storage temperature is essential to preserving the quality and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products. Each type of medication has specific requirements that must be honored throughout its shelf life and its distribution journey. While exact ranges are always defined by the product manufacturer, most cold chain shipments are built around a handful of standard temperature bands.
Common storage ranges
- Deep-frozen / ultra-cold: approximately -80°C to -60°C, used for certain vaccines and biologic materials that require the most extreme cold.
- Frozen: approximately -25°C to -15°C, common for products that must stay solidly frozen but not ultra-cold.
- Refrigerated: 2°C to 8°C, the most familiar range, covering many vaccines, insulin, and biologic therapies.
- Controlled room temperature (CRT): typically 15°C to 25°C, for products that must simply be kept from overheating or freezing.
Why the right range matters
Storing a product too warm can accelerate degradation and reduce potency. Storing it too cold, freezing something meant to stay refrigerated, for example, can be just as damaging, breaking down the product's structure. The goal is not simply “cold”; it is the right temperature, consistently.
Designing to the requirement
Once the target range is known, it shapes every other decision: the type of shipper, the refrigerant, the amount of conditioning, and how the shipment is monitored. A 2°C to 8°C payload traveling in summer needs a very different pack-out than a frozen payload moving in winter.
