Why the vocabulary matters

Cold chain planning comes with its own vocabulary. Understanding these core terms makes it far easier to choose the right solution and communicate clearly with partners and suppliers.

Container types

Passive container: A shipper with no power source. It relies on insulation and refrigerants, such as gel packs or phase change materials, to hold the product temperature for the duration of transit.

Active container: A shipper that uses powered heating or cooling to precisely control its internal temperature, often for longer or more demanding routes.

Cooling materials

Refrigerant: A cooling agent such as gel packs, bricks, or bottles used to keep products at the right temperature inside a passive shipper.

Phase Change Material (PCM): A substance that absorbs or releases energy as it changes between solid and liquid states. This transition helps hold a stable internal temperature over time.

Conditioning

Pre-conditioning: Bringing materials to a target temperature before a shipment is packed, so they perform predictably once in transit.

Post-conditioning: Acclimating refrigerants to a specific temperature just before they are packed with the product.

Pack-out strategies

• Seasonal pack-out: Packaging or conditioning adjusted for the season, recognizing that a summer shipment faces different challenges than a winter one.
• Universal pack-out: Standardized packaging designed to perform year-round, regardless of season, simplifying operations at the cost of some efficiency.
